Holds That Last: How to Maintain and Extend the Life of Your Wall Hardware

Holds That Last: How to Maintain and Extend the Life of Your Wall Hardware

You’ve invested time and money into your home wall—now it’s time to take care of it. While most climbing holds are built to last, they still benefit from basic maintenance and smart handling. At Ledge Climbing, we build our holds to handle heavy use, but we also want to help you make them last even longer.

Here’s how to keep your setup clean, safe, and session-ready year-round.

The Enemies of Hold Longevity

Most hold damage comes from:

  • Over-chalking

  • UV exposure (on outdoor walls)

  • Improper cleaning methods

  • Excessive torque when tightening bolts

  • Dirt and oils from repeated use

Proper care doesn’t just keep them clean—it keeps them climbing like new.

Cleaning Tips for Climbing Holds

1. Warm Water + Soft Brush
This is the gold standard. Skip the power washer—too much pressure can damage texture.

2. Avoid Harsh Chemicals
No bleach, degreasers, or abrasive cleaners. These can eat away at surface grit or discolor pigment.

3. Scrub Gently, Rinse Fully
Let your holds soak for a few minutes in warm water, then use a soft-bristle brush to scrub chalk and skin oil.

4. Let Them Dry Fully Before Reuse
Moist holds trap dust and degrade texture faster.

Smart Handling = Longer Life

  • Don’t overtighten bolts: Hand-tight with an Allen wrench is enough. Stripped inserts can ruin a hold permanently.

  • Rotate holds every few months: This prevents uneven wear and keeps sessions fresh.

  • Use crash mats even indoors: Less impact on your wall = less stress on mounting hardware.

  • Store unused holds in a dry bin: Not in the sun, not loose in a pile.
