The Reset Ritual: Why You Should Strip Your Wall Every Season

Climbers talk a lot about training cycles, progressive overload, and skill development—but one of the simplest ways to refresh your training is also one of the most overlooked: stripping your wall completely.

At Ledge Climbing, we believe in deliberate movement—and that starts with a deliberate reset. Whether you’re climbing daily or casually, here’s why clearing your wall seasonally is one of the smartest things you can do.

Why a Full Reset Works

It’s easy to fall into ruts. Even with frequent tweaks, walls can become predictable. A full reset:

  • Forces new movement

  • Sparks creative problem setting

  • Helps identify overused holds

  • Allows deep cleaning and inspection

  • Prevents training plateaus

When you clear everything off the wall, you're not just changing problems—you're resetting your mindset.

When to Reset

We recommend a full strip and reset every 3–4 months, or at the start of each season. That cadence aligns with:

  • Natural weather/training changes

  • Skin recovery cycles

  • Goal resets (e.g. outdoor project seasons)

  • Seasonal family schedules

Tips for a Better Reset

1. Sort Holds by Type, Not Just Color
Separate your pinches, jugs, feet, and slopers. This makes it easier to plan functional routes.

2. Deep Clean Your Wall & Holds
Wipe down plywood, vacuum chalk, and scrub holds with warm water and a soft brush.

3. Log Old Problems Before You Strip
Snap a photo or sketch sequences you liked—you can revisit or rework them later.

4. Set with Intention
Plan your new layout: what skills do you want to train? What grip types were missing? Start there.

Add Something New to Keep It Fresh

A reset is the perfect time to inject new movement and shape variety. Grab a small set of fresh holds to add unfamiliar styles or challenge new grip types.

We keep our batches small and shapes intentional—so you’re not just filling space, you’re building better problems.

Make It a Ritual

Stripping your wall isn’t a chore—it’s a chance to evolve. Make it a team event, invite friends, or turn it into a mini comp night. Just like spring cleaning, you’ll feel lighter and more motivated when it’s done.
