You’ve built your home wall. You’re logging sessions. But when it comes time to hit real rock, things still feel… different. Why?
Because plastic isn’t rock—unless you set it like it is.
At Ledge Climbing, we shape every hold with natural movement in mind. Whether you’re training for granite slabs, steep sandstone, or techy limestone, we’ve got tips to help you set smarter and climb stronger—with holds that mimic the feel of the real thing.
Why Home Walls Don’t Always Prepare You for Outside
Most home setups default to steep angles, big moves, and gym-style plastic. That builds strength—but not necessarily the subtlety or technical skills needed outdoors.
Common gaps:
-
Overuse of jugs and big footholds
-
Lack of directional movement
-
No friction sensitivity training
-
Limited route reading
Setting Like You’re Outside: Tips That Work
1. Use Directional Holds and Bad Feet
Outdoors, body positioning is everything. Set holds that require flagging, opposing pressure, and foot trust. Our real-rock inspired holds are perfect for this.
2. Limit the “Grab-and-Go” Mentality
Avoid only setting power moves. Instead, build problems where precision, tension, or foot swaps are mandatory.
3. Incorporate Slopers, Rails, and Compression
Many crags feature slopey, open-handed movement. Set accordingly and train with lower grip force but better body awareness.
4. Dial Back the Volume
Fewer holds = more route reading. Try outdoor-style spacing to mimic the decision-making and beta uncertainty you’ll face at the crag.
5. Add “Unknowns” to Your Problems
Set blind holds, bad holds, or chalkless routes to practice trusting movement—just like you’ll need to outside.
Use Holds That Feel Natural
Ledge holds are hand-shaped to reflect outdoor features—edges, scoops, crimps, directional bumps—not just blobs and buckets.
